We all want our kids to succeed in school, but sometimes they need a little extra help. Math anxiety is a very common problem that students of all ages can suffer from. According to Susan Leung, Centre Director at Sylvan Learning Centre in Oakville math anxiety can affect a student’s performance as well as the ability to learn new math skills.
“What we want to do is help kids improve their confidence in math and decrease their math anxiety,” explains Leung. Since math fears begin when a child doesn’t understand the math concept being taught, the Sylvan technique takes kids back to their comfort level. “We go back to where the students are comfortable and build on skills from there to help them improve their foundation skills and confidence.”
Math is an extremely important subject that is needed to gain admission into colleges and universities. If a child becomes fearful of math, they may be limiting their future when it comes time to choose a career path.
“It’s really important for kids to build those math skills along the way so they are able to be successful in high school math,” explains Leung. For parents who may be suffering from their own math phobia or learning loss, Sylvan Learning Centre has a course for parents called Forgotten Math for Parents. “It’s designed to help parents learn some of those basic math skills that they may have forgotten, so they can help their kids through the grade six to nine years. It touches on algebra, fractions, and decimals. It really helps parents who may have that math anxiety to be more comfortable with math and help their kids.”
At Sylvan Learning Centre, patient math experts help students from kindergarten up to grade 12 and tailor individualized plans to meet the child’s exact learning needs.
“We have high school math teachers that do tutoring for kids,” says Leung, adding that students can get extra help with test prep and assignments. Math tutoring is extremely helpful for students looking to improve their grades for university admission.
