Close to 40 parents, kids and community members got together at Dundas’s St. Augustine school Saturday to “de-pave” paradise and dig up a parking lot as part of a joint initiative with a local not-for-profit.
“Parents have complained since I’ve been here at St. Augustine school that the playground is all asphalt and there’s no shade,” said principal Judy Santi-Derubeis. “So in the springtime and the fall when it’s warm outside, our asphalt is very, very hot. Our goal was to provide some shade.”
Volunteers chipped up chunks of asphalt around some saplings recently planted along the edge of the schoolyard. The goal, explained Santi-Derubeis, was to increase the elementary school’s green play space, while also giving the trees room to grow.
