Kitchens are the hub of family life – for family gatherings and special occasions. It’s also party central. It’s where the food is, where the drinks are and usually where you’ll find the host and hostess. Designing a new kitchen that’s functional and fits your lifestyle is achievable. The first step is to think about how you use the space.
“If you have a large family who gather for meals in the kitchen, then we need to design an eating area where you have enough room to do that,” explained Tracey Maxwell of Granite Transformations in Oakville. “Or if you are a baker or an avid cooker, then we design a surface for that. It really is all about your unique lifestyle.”
Once you’ve decided how you want your kitchen to function, Maxwell will show you how to add flow, which starts with the location of the three fundamental elements – your stove, fridge and sink. The space and proximity among those three elements should be reasonable and effective.
“You don’t want to be 100 miles away from your stove when you’re trying to get something out of the fridge,” Maxwell said. “And you also want to be near the sink.”
The most effective way to make those elements flow is to make sure they are situated within a triangular area.
After those decisions are made then you normally start thinking about functionality starting with drawers or pot drawers, making sure they’re accessible.
“After that people start thinking about space for cabinets. One of the reasons people want new kitchens is to eliminate blind corners. There are fabulous corner cabinet solutions available.”
