Finishing touches in the kitchen means everything to its overall look and design and it’s a fabulous way to add that extra “oomph” to any look. It starts with the sink and faucet. Gone are the days of double bowl stainless steel sinks and basic faucets. There are so many more options available to fit any lifestyle.
“There are interesting pull out faucets with different kinds of sprays on them,” said Tracy Maxwell of Granite Transformations. “And there are different shapes and sizes of sinks that add charisma to a kitchen without going overboard on cost.”
Although stainless steel sinks are still popular, sink materials have grown to include granite and Corian.
“Stainless steel is not a thing of the past but now you can get it in an interesting shape,” Maxwell explained. “Rather than the standard double bowl, what we’re seeing is one large bowl where you can put woks and griddles and a second smaller sink for washing small items.”
And because most people use a dishwasher there is no need to fill up a sink to the brim with water to wash dishes, which is a cost saving feature and helps save water. “It just makes your sink more functional.”
Maxwell also suggests extending the life of your stainless steel sink by purchasing a special insert that looks like a grid and sits in your sink, which keeps everything just above the bottom so there won’t be any scratches to it.
As for the other materials available, Maxwell’s favourite is granite. “It is just fantastic – you don’t see marks on it, you don’t need to polish it, it doesn’t stain and you don’t have to worry about anything wrecking it.”
In addition to the sink and faucet, knobs and handles are an inexpensive way to add “pop” to your kitchen.
“If you’ve had your cabinets for some time and you’re getting tired of the look of them, for $100 you can get yourself a whole new array of hardware,” Maxwell said. “You won’t believe the difference new hardware will make in your kitchen. If you have a plain door, go for something a little more interesting; and if you have a detailed door, go for something more subtle.”
