You’re ready for a new kitchen, now you need to decide just what kind of kitchen you want. Sure it will have appliances, counter space, storage and an eating area but for each of those kitchen staples, there are plenty of choices. Is it any wonder that so many of Kitchen Designers Plus customers aren’t sure exactly what they would like their new kitchen to look like? A visit to the Mississauga showroom provides inspiration, with five distinct kitchen styles on display.
John Vanderkolk, owner of Kitchen Designers Plus estimates that about half of the kitchens his company installs lean toward the more traditional, classic style. Warm, wooden cabinetry, tumbled marble backsplash, and granite countertops are components of this popular look.
For customers who can’t agree on a particular look, Vanderkolk recommends the transitional style, which is a blend that might incorporate natural wood Shaker style cabinets with modern details, glass tile backsplash, stone countertops and stainless steel appliances.
Most cottage kitchens installed by Kitchen Designers Plus reflect the country style, a trend that has recently been replayed in the suburbs. The country kitchen is identified by distressed wood cabinetry like the black distressed island in the showroom and yellow cabinetry. The mix of materials also features a light cherry wood hood. Cottage style could also mean bead-board style cabinet doors, a mix of colours and various glass types.
Vanderkolk defines another style as Canadian modern, which is less slick than the European modern units manufactured in Europe and shipped here by container. The Canadian version recreated in the showroom displays slab doors from local suppliers, with stainless steel handles and thick countertops. The absence of handles, slick finishes and few upper cabinets are hallmarks of the European modern style kitchen that rounds out the showroom’s selections.
In addition to the model kitchens the company has cooked up in its Mississauga, North York and Oakville showrooms there is a gallery of before and after shots on the Kitchen Designers Plus website at
