Artisans through the ages have used mosaics as decorative elements or to
tell a story through images crafted from small pieces of glass, stone or ceramic.
The effect is stunning, so it’s no wonder that mosaic tiles are a popular trend
in today’s bathrooms.
Tracy Maxwell of Granite Transformations is fully behind that trend. She
describes the incredible versatility and beauty of mosaics that elevates bathroom
tiles to an art form. Custom designs allow for one-of-a-kind creations while
predesigned mosaics offer a less expensive and time saving option.
When adding such a dramatic element to a room, it’s important to make the
right choice. Granite Transformations begins the process with a home tour and
design consultation. This step ensures that the bathroom will tie in with the
rest of the home and reflect the style or mood a client is hoping to achieve.
The look could range from classy and rich to vibrant and sunny, depending on
the colours.
“The most important thing is that you’re not limited to white tiles or
acrylic walls any more. You can do something really fantastic in that space,”
Maxwell suggests.
The best quality glass tiles are infused with colour, giving a rich, deep
tone. Working with these tiles, Tracy says her company can “design something
really, really interesting”. Stone tiles
can also be used to create a mosaic. Tumbled marble or limestone tiles are
porous however and should not be used in a shower area as they’ll absorb water.
They work beautifully on a floor, counter top, backsplash or the edge of a tub.
“I love mosaic showers,” Maxwell
admits.
She’s particularly enthused about a predesigned glass tile mosaic which is
pre-grouted and pre-mounted. It’s “super fast” to install and creates an
amazing design element. Another bonus is that the grout is acrylic and it won’t
stain or collect mildew.
For an even more customized mosaic feature, clients can choose their own
design and colour pallet. At the Granite Transformations showroom in Oakville,
customers can see the potential of mosaics as a bathroom focal point. There are
also many inspirational photographs of creative designs including a swimming
pool the company installed in the Caribbean. Unfortunately, our climate is not
kind to mosaics in outdoor pools but we can enjoy them on a smaller scale in
our bathrooms.
