Murline Mallette, executive director of Liaison College of Culinary Arts in Hamilton attributes her lifelong interest in food to her grandmother. As a young girl, she worked summers at her grandparent’s farm in Shanty Bay, ON, where they grew asparagus and dill for a local grocery store. Vegetables were harvested from the garden and brought straight to the kitchen, where Mallette often helped her grandmother with the cooking. With everything made from scratch with homegrown produce, Mallette’s commitment to fresh food was born and nurtured.

After enjoying a career in nursing, Malette took some time to raise a family with her husband, Gene. His work in banking frequently moved the young family around northern Ontario. Eventually they settled in Toronto and Mallette kept herself busy with a job in sales and marketing with CN hotels, owning and operating the Toronto School of Business, and working as a guest lecturer for Ryerson University. While teaching adults, Mallette discovered she had a passion for adult education. Combining her new found passion with her love of food, Malette and her husband became the first franchisees of the Liaison College cooking school, opening a location in downtown Hamilton in 1997.

Today, Mallette continues to share her love of food with her students and she imparts the same wisdom that her grandmother taught her as a young girl – use the freshest food possible, share it with good company, and teach your children to cook.
