Most students who enter into post-secondary education do so with the aim of getting a job in their chosen career. They’re hoping their investment of time and money will pay off. A large majority of graduates from Canadian Therapeutic College (CTC) do reach that goal, finding employment as health care professionals.
It was the broadening of the health care field and the related job opportunities that prompted Kevin Sloan to establish the college in 1994. It offers courses in massage therapy, sports injury therapy, primary care paramedics, dental office chair-side assistance and intra-oral level two certification. The college trains graduates to enable them to become certified in their chosen field by completing provincial exams.
Students are mentored by professionals working in the health care field who are up-to-date with current practices, as well as government guidelines and regulations. This is “key” to offering quality education, the college founder suggests. The college also provides professional development to faculty to equip them to be effective classroom instructors.
“The large majority of our faculty is working professionals, where working at the college is an adjunct to their profession,” explains Sloan.
For hands-on experience, the college operates a fully equipped rehabilitation centre that features hydrotherapy, exercise physiology equipment and other amenities. There is also a therapy centre, a library facilitated by a librarian and a computer lab.
Once the course is completed, students have access to a job registry program that connects them with employers. The college boasts a high placement rate and the graduation rate is usually in the high 90s, according the Sloan.
He says the mission of the college is excellence in educating and training health care professionals. CTC offers small interactive classes that ensure personal attention as well as support for students who are having difficulties.
