There’s nothing like stains, chips or a dated colour to make your bathtub an eyesore. Professional refinishing will make it look like new again and best of all, it’s a much simpler process than removing the old tub, says Dennis Larocque, owner of Bathtub King in Hamilton.
A new bathtub may not be expensive but removing it can be costly. According to Larocque, tubs that are worn out or out-of-date are usually the home’s original tub and were installed “right to the studs”. Removing these tubs is likely to damage the surrounding tiles which would have to be replaced. If the new tub doesn’t line up with the existing floor, a new floor will be next on the renovation list. Finally, there will be plumbing involved in the installation.
To avoid a costly and inconvenient renovation, a tub can be transformed from dull and old to shiny new in about three hours. While any colour can be matched, Larocque says most choose white or “biscuit” which is the new almond. The process involves preparing the surface to remove stains and shine, which allows the new glaze to adhere. It takes about 24 hours for the surface to dry to the touch and another couple of days to ensure that there is a good bond. Then the tub is ready for water again.
“When it’s done, your bathtub will look brand new and your tiles will remain intact,” explains the Bathtub King owner. The resurfacing process can also be applied to tiles for a more complete bathroom colour make-over.
