“There’s a tremendous amount of personality in this home. That’s what we focused on doing.” Interior designer Regina Sturrock is speaking about Aquamarine, an exquisite Marz Homes model home that is a feather in her decorator’s cap. It does indeed have personality with characteristics that include classy, strong, vivacious and at the same time warm and comforting.
The four-bedroom home is located at Waterview Village, a Marz Homes exclusive cul-de-sac development of lakeside estate homes in Stoney Creek. Sturrock’s approach was to customize and personalize the home’s décor.
The designer incorporated a “significant amount of strong architectural detail” that includes simple but substantial clean-lined moldings. The detail is seen on the walls and ceilings. She describes impressive ceiling detail in the dining room as a “robust version” of a coffered ceiling, featuring a large oval. This is combined with other architectural elements which are wrapped into the envelope of the space to create a sculptural, layered effect.
“There is predominant amount of beautiful hardwood, interspersed with what we have chosen, which is some beautiful marble and mosaic to really create the impact in the focal points.”
The striking feature just inside the front door is, Sturrock says, “an absolutely beautiful area carpet-style mosaic which is a basket weave of Carrara marble and black marble”. The basket weave motif is repeated in the master en-suite upstairs with a combination of Nero Absoluto and Crema Marfil marbles. The shower is lined with porcelain tile that mimics the Crema Marfil but is lower maintenance and “equally as beautiful.”
“People are really aware of good design these days – they are really in tune with what they need and what they want and for that reason we really focus on built-ins and custom mill-work,” explains the designer, adding that these custom elements fit perfectly into the design of the home and with the homeowner’s tastes.
The floor plan of Aquamarine is described by Sturrock as “a bit of a stretch beyond the open concept” with very large open rooms but still a “certain degree of intimacy in each room as well”. This is what she and her team were attempting to achieve when designing the model home. In a home of this design the transition spaces play a very large role, according to the designer. The spaces that join the rooms infuse detail and create interest from room to room.
The overall look is eclectic, a combination of traditional and modern elements. The designer points to transitional pieces like the Louis Cartel ghost chairs encircling the majestic carved trestle table in the spacious dining room. Sturrock chose a “rather muted envelope, nuanced so that we can see the architectural detail.” The colour scheme however is very brilliant with dramatic black and white contrasted with hits of fuchsia, citrus green and yellow.
