If you’ve jumped on the fitness bandwagon only to bail out a few weeks later, then you could benefit from the staying power of a personal trainer.

“A personal trainer knows how to motive a client and push them past their limits,” explains John Savidis, founder of the Lean and Fit program. Even though he’s been training for more than 20 years, he still counts on a personal trainer to push him further.

These fitness professionals are called personal trainers because they focus on individual needs and wants. Some clients might be working through an injury or be training for a particular sport for example, while others want to improve their fitness level and become leaner.

The training is coupled with Savidis’ formula for “what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat”. Before embarking on a personal training program, clients undergo a body analysis that measures body mass index (BMI), lean muscle and hydration level. Savidis is careful to match a client with a compatible trainer. The training program is then customized to suit the client.

“Having that connection with the trainer is so important,” explains the fitness expert.

The program will concentrate on weight training, he says. As we age, we lose muscle mass resulting in a slower metabolic rate and possible weight gain. If a weight loss program causes loss of fat and muscle, the weight will be gained back and more, says Savidis.

“Weight training is the one of the most important things that you need to do and a lot of people neglect that.”

A personal trainer is a motivator but individuals must find out what motivates them internally as well.

“We’re here to educate you and motivate you; we can’t do it for you. It’s not what we teach you, it’s what you do with what we teach you,” he suggests.
