One of the most desirable aspects of beauty is a bright, healthy smile. Often referred to as the Hollywood smile, people are looking for straight, white, bright teeth when they visit Dr. Bryan Stein of Pathways Dental Care.
But there are many aspects to what makes a smile beautiful, advises Stein. “There’s colour, shape, size of the teeth. There’s how the teeth relate to the lips and how the teeth just relate to the whole face and how they fit within the jaws.”
In cosmetic dentistry it’s very important to look at all aspects, or pieces of the puzzle, Stein says, “to help get the patients that beautiful smile that they’re looking for.” At Pathways Dental Care Stein offers patients a free smile analysis.
At the first appointment, Stein sits his patients down to figure out what the smile means to them. “Because everyone’s a little different,” he says. “Some people come in and they want straighter teeth, or they want brighter teeth, or they want that Hollywood smile.”
In order to accomplish the perfect look, Stein imploys the use of both scientific and artistic tools to get the outcome he’s looking for.
“We can use anything from braces, to implant, to veneers,” Stein says. That’s the artistic part.
The science that’s used is called golden proportions, which uses a ratio of one to one point six (1:1.6). It is the use and perception of that ratio that causes our eyes to perceive what is beautiful. Used by the ancient Greeks, golden proportion is seen a lot in both architecture and nature.
So Stein incorporates these principles when crafting the perfect smile for his patients.
This can be an emotional process, says Stein, the result of which is often increased confidence in his patients. “They feel better about themselves,” he says, and “it really gives them the confidence so that they can go out there and do the things that they really want to do.”
