Compression stockings aren’t just for grandmas any more, and they don’t look like the ones worn by generations past either.
Susan Tomczuk, a Certified Compression and Mastectomy Fitter with Dell Pharmacy, defines compression stockings as“graduated elastic stocking that anyone can wear to control any sort of lower leg problem.” Post-ulcer patients are often prescribed compressions stockings which are also helpful for treating swelling related to hereditary factors, work, lifestyle or pregnancy, she explains.
The technology involved in manufacturing compression stockings has changed dramatically, says Tomczuk. In response to demand, they now reflect fashion trends and are available many colours and are made from a range of materials including cotton and ultra sheer. They come in knee length, thigh length and panty hose. In addition to some “funky colours” some are trimmed with lace around the top band, some have open toes, while others glisten with Swarovski crystals.
“They’ve become a very fashionable product so they appeal to a wider group of people,” says the registered nurse. She adds that Dell stores carry compression stockings from four or five manufacturers.
While customers can purchase compression stockings off the shelf, Dell Pharmacies employ certified fitters like Tomczuk to recommend the appropriate product for specific needs. The specialists assess a customer’s feet and legs and in some cases will communicate with their physician. If it is necessary to place a special order for compression stockings, the customer is fitted when they pick up the order to ensure that the stockings are comfortable to wear.
The cost of compression stockings may be covered by covered health plans, advises Tomczuk. She suggests that it’s a good idea to check with an employer’s human resources department regarding the eligibility of the claim.
