For nearly 25 years, ice climbers in the Hamilton
region have been enjoying the sport on Hamilton Conservation Authority lands.
Though warmer weather and the salt run-off from encroaching urban development
in the area means that ice forms less reliably than father north, several falls
are suitable for climbing between the beginning of December and the end of
March each year.
Ice climbing on HCA lands is secondary to the Authority’s
protection of the Niagara Escarpment’s geological, biological and cultural
heritage, but is an excellent way for residents to enjoy the conservation areas
and be active in nature during the winter months.
Release forms: By
completing a signed liability waiver, climbers are able to apply to participate
in ice climbing on lands administered by the HCA. Applicants can expect the HCA
to take approximately one week to process the applications, and upon acceptance
climbers will be granted a seasonal permit to climb in designated climbing
areas only. Permits must be carried by climbers at all times, and must be
presented to HCA field staff when requested.
Where to climb: There
are two designated climbing areas on HCA lands for climbers to enjoy. Climbing
is permitted only at Tiffany Falls Conservation Area and Spencer Gorge
Wilderness Area. While climbing is prohibited at Webster’s Falls, it is
permitted at nearby Tews Falls.
Rules: Ice
climbing at the HCA is governed by a “leave no trace” ethic, a guiding
principle that helps to ensure climbers will continue to have access to ice
climbing in the Hamilton region for years to come. In accordance with that,
climbers are required to remove crampons and similar devices from their feet
when crossing the access trail bridges to prevent damage to the wood deck.
In order to apply for a permit, and once approved as a
permit holder, climbers must be members of the Alpine Club of Canada, or be
part of an ice climbing class from a school registered with the HCA. In order
to be registered with the HCA, ice climbing schools must provide a satisfactory
certificate of liability insurance.
