Barbara McKean has been involved in nature interpretation and outdoor education since 1976, working for conservation authorities, provincial parks and since 1982, at Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton.

Barb has held several positions at RBG including naturalist-teacher, interpretation coordinator, public programs coordinator and is currently head of education. She is a passionate advocate for hands-on outdoor experience for children and is the leading force behind Back to Nature, an initiative focusing on ways to better connect children with the outdoors.

A past Chair of Interpretation Canada, she holds degrees in both science and education, and is a member of the College of Teachers of Ontario. She has also written children’s books, consulted for museums, parks and school boards, taught interpretation at Mohawk, Sir Sandford Fleming and Humber Colleges, and has been recognized with several awards for her longstanding leadership and contribution to the field of environmental education including the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario’s President’s Award, and most recently, Hamilton’s Environmentalist of the Year Award.
