“With the selection of technology today you can have anything from a pocket-size digital camera that includes the latest and greatest of high definition video or a video camera with a 224 gigabyte hard drive…with up to 50 hours of recording time.”
That’s how Jeff Cole, camera and portable electronics specialist at East Hamilton Radio describes the range of digital recording devices available to consumers. Media cards have taken over, he says adding that they can hold an amazing 64 gigabytes of information.
The next generation of camcorders is equipped with its own hard drive, boosting memory up to 224 gigabytes, the equivalent of 50 hours of recording time. In addition to providing massive memory, the hard drive makes it possible to download and transfer recordings directly from the camera.
“If you are at a family reunion and you have family members who want copies of your footage, you can copy it right then and there for them,” says the specialist.
He admits that with new technology “there is always a focus on reducing the size” but cautions that reduced size can reduce quality of some elements. He recommends getting something “middle of the road” in terms of size.
“Certain parts of cameras and camcorders are critical like the lens assembly and sensor. Those two pieces you don’t want to sacrifice for smaller size. Looking at the technology in general, yes they are coming down in size but the smallest sometimes isn’t the best,”
After a customer is guided to the right choice for their purposes and lifestyle, staff will demonstrate how to use it.
“We want to make sure you are getting the most out of it,” explains Cole.
Mastering the video camera is the first step that must be followed by downloaded and viewing the images. Software is loaded onto your computer and a docking station transfers the information directly to the computer hard drive or burns directly to DVDs. It’s also possible to select play lists for compiling the “movies” on DVDs. Televisions now accept memory cards so you can view your videos on the big screen with ease.
Although customers are generally satisfied with the standard camcorder package, there are accessories available including waterproof marine cases, wireless microphones, special lights and other components to maximize the uses of the video camera.
