Making a decision to install an in-ground swimming pool is only the first of many steps to creating a backyard that lets you vacation at home.
With 40 years experience in the pool business, Bob Simpson, owner of The Pool Shoppe, says the next step is a consultation with the experts. Customer expectations are the starting point at an initial meeting where questions can be answered and a price can be determined. The next step is a home visit.
“The salesperson comes into your yard and works with you and your landscaper to make sure that everything is going to fit together,” Simpson explains.
Since not all backyards are rectangular shape, lot size and configuration must be considered. Existing features like a deck and trees impact the plan as well. The elevation of the yard is the most important consideration, according to Simpson. If the pool is located too low, there will be drainage problems. A higher elevation will require a retaining wall. Based on all of these elements, the salesperson will suggest the best shape for the pool.
While each pool sold comes with a low-voltage light, customers usually incorporate perimeter lighting to enhance the atmosphere, Simpson explains.
In-ground pools have not changed much over the years with the exception of the Vinyl liners, says Simpson, explaining that for the sake of aesthetics, they are available in more decorative styles. The advances have been in the equipment, Simpson advises, with more energy efficient pumps that use half the electricity of older models and gas pool heaters that operate more efficiently.
When it comes to pool maintenance, new tools reduce the amount of work involved. Robotic pool vacuums and automatic chlorine and salt systems simplify the process. “It’s not a big problem,” suggests Simpson.
Pool purchasers are invited to seminars on opening and closing a pool to learn the process. There is also the option of booking professionals to do the job. Instruction is given on pool maintenance and proper use of chemicals. Simpson says that customers are encouraged to bring water samples to the store for the first couple of weeks to ensure they are on the right track.
The Pool Shoppe’s pool court, featuring six fully operational swimming pools, is the ideal training ground for pool owners. When customers are having a problem with some aspect of pool maintenance, they can have it corrected “on the spot”.
