In the middle of farmer’s fields in 1969, the site excavation for The Square Shopping Centre began. Hazel McCallion attended the ground breaking ceremony in the middle of the wind-swept hayfield. When the doors opened in 1973, 160,000 people came to shop, causing a mammoth traffic jam. Four major retailers – Dominion, Sears, The Bay, and Woolco – anchored the four corners of the mall. At the time, Square One was Canada’s second shopping centre.

Square One completed a $42 million interior renovation in 2007 which enhanced the overall appearance and ambience. Storefronts were raised, floors, ceilings and lighting were upgraded and the new soft seating areas transformed the Centre. Much of the centre is now bathed in natural light from skylights enhancing shoppers’ enjoyment of the property’s interior.

A strong fashion assortment makes Square One a very appealing destination for style-conscious shoppers throughout Mississauga and the western GTA. Shoppers have a choice of an impressive range of high profile brands to shop including Coach, Aritzia, Sephora, Hugo Boss, Tommy Denim, Brown’s, Aeropostale, Guess by Marciano, Bebe, and BCBG Maxazria.

Today, Square One has evolved and grown to be the hub of Mississauga’s City Centre. With over 360 stores and services, four major department stores, and over 40 places to eat, Square One is a city within a city.
