Generally windows are to provide us with a view to the outside. It is important however, to consider what’s inside our windows as well.
Terry Bobiak, president of QSI Windows, Doors and Sunrooms places performance at the top of the list, next to installation. In order to perform well, the sills, hardware and the glass technology need to be of a high quality. The glass technology in windows installed by QSI has an extremely high rating of R-10. The typical window that his company would be replacing has a rating of only R-1.9. Another advantage of QSI windows is that there is insulation in the channels around the glass and foam insulation is injected into frame.
“You want to really have a look at the product in detail because they all have good numbers today. You have to have good numbers to meet the government requirements,” Bobiak explains.
While colour and style are considerations, even the best window won’t perform well without the appropriate installation. Depending on the style of window, the new window is installed from brick-to-brick or installed within the existing frame. The wood outside is covered with maintenance-free cladding in this case.
In order to save on energy costs in the future, R-Value, or the measure of resistance of heat loss, is important. Terms like R-Value and energy rating can be confusing but Bobiak advises that QSI customers are informed about the terminology and the options so that they can make an educated decision about replacement windows.
”It’s part of our success,” says the window expert.
