If you’re looking for a place to indulge your sweet
tooth, look no further than the Old Firehall Confectionery located on historic
Main Street in Unionville. Specializing in old fashioned handmade treats, this
eatertainment destination is sure to delight visitors of all ages.
The story behind the Old Firehall Confectionery is
one of serendipity. Rob Kadlovski bought the historic red-brick building as a
new home for the head office of Nicholby’s, a chain of 30 convenience stores
located in office buildings, hotels, and highway rest stops across Ontario.
Living in Unionville with his wife, Wendy, the whole objective was to have an
office closer to home, but the more they thought about the pretty building and
the location on bustling Main Street populated with tourists and shoppers, they
realized an office wasn’t the best use of the building.
“It evolved from an idea that there was something
better we could do for Main Street in Unionville and through a lot of thinking
and hard work, we ended up with the confectionery,” recalls Kadlovski, adding
that the store was embraced by the community. As for the spelling of
confectionery, Kadlovski says there are two different ways to spell the word.
“Confectionary spelled with an “a” means you sell
confectionary which I’ve been doing for the past 30 years,” says Kadlovski
referring to Nicholby’s. “When you spell it with an “e” it’s actually about
making confectionery.”
With display cases
filled with gourmet cupcakes, exquisite truffles, thick slabs of creamy fudge,
and chocolate dipped strawberries, pretzels, and licorice – you’re sure to find
the perfect treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. Let’s not forget about the Kawartha
Diary ice cream, creamy hot chocolate made my melting mint, caramel and milk
chocolate bars, and a mix-and-match bulk candy section.
Everything in the store is made on the premises in full
view of the customers by highly trained chocolatiers who have been trained in
the chocolate arts. Some of the recipes have been acquired over the years – Old
Firehall’s fudge recipe for example comes from a gentleman who represented
Canada at Expo ’67 in fudge making. New products are created through research
and development. It can take several months before they’re perfect and available
for customers to savour.
“It’s really important that we get the best quality
and ultimately, the best taste at the end of the experience,” explains
Kadlovski.
