If you talk, smile, laugh or frown, then you’ll eventually get wrinkles. This happens over time as the skin bends and flexes over contracting muscles and produces creases which turn into wrinkles.
“Any time you fold the skin in a repetitive fashion, it’s going to form a wrinkle,” explained Dr. Otto Weiglein of the Centre for Personal Surgery. “And there are different types. Dynamic wrinkles are formed by the muscle movements of expressions such as frowning, crow’s feet or scowling.”
The look of these dynamic wrinkles is easily improved through non-surgical treatment using Botox, the well-known injectable substance that prevents muscles from contracting.
“Everyone has an opinion about Botox but not everyone understands how it works, “Dr. Weiglein said. “And it’s easier to see the effects of Botox rather than explain it. We’re not interested in removing all form of facial expression, but rather tone-down inappropriate expressions.”
The biggest complaint Dr. Weiglein hears is that a face looks angry. “These clients are wearing faces that make them look unapproachable or angry and it’s that kind of facial expression, especially in the forehead, that Botox is perfect for. What we do is change the way you wear your face.”
Treatment is very straightforward and takes only 10 to 15 minutes and is done regularly at Dr. Weiglein’s clinic. It starts to work after four to five days. “Everyone goes home and looks in the mirror to see if anything is happening, and clearly nothing happens on the first day, it peaks at about two weeks and lasts about three or four months.”
