If you have a keen interest in sports and would like a career in that field, then working as a Sports Injury Therapist™ might be the answer. Treatments are a unique blend of massage therapy and modalities from sports medicine returning injured athletes to optimal health. Canadian Therapeutic College (CTC) offers the three-year Sports Injury Therapy™ as a dual diploma program. Students graduate with a diploma in Sports Injury Therapy™.

“You have all the massage therapy techniques as well as the extra modalities pulled from Sports Medicine,” said Sarah Burns, administrative/marketing assistant for the college.

Students entering this program with an undergrad degree in the health sciences would most likely be eligible for advanced standing and could complete the Sports Injury Therapy™ program in two years.

“Sports enthusiasts are better tailored for the program only because they realize the importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation,” Burns said. “We get a lot of students who are football players, gymnasts, or dancers, for example, who want to tailor their careers to athletes in their specific fields.”

To complete the program, students must complete a minimum of 400 clinic hours, 400 field hours and 20 massage outreach hours. Many students will opt to take their field placements in the sports they are enthusiastic about. “They can do their placements with either professional or amateur sports teams,” Burns added. “We have students who have worked with the Hamilton Ti-Cats, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Raptors.”

Once a student has graduated they will be recommended to write the Provincial Certification Exams with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, and will also get a diploma in Sports Injury Therapy™. As a graduate of CTC, degree completion is another option. Graduates find work in privately owned clinics, national or provincial sports teams, rehabilitation centres, physical therapy clinics, chiropractic clinics, fitness institutes, physicians' offices, and medical and health centres.
