Better Skin

By: Jane Muller

Most of us can pick out flaws in our skin and unwanted hair just by looking in the mirror. To get an accurate perception of problem areas, a professional like Judith Finn of E.C.C. Cosmetic and Laser Centre will take a much closer look.

Her clinic offers a number of treatments and therapies that will improve your appearance. To find out which one could give you more beautiful skin, Finn recommends a consultation. This initial session includes a skin analysis, a “very important” step, advises the college director.

The clinic’s dermal therapists conduct the analysis using surgical operating microscopes. With this technology, they can identify sun damage, rosacea and acne as well as any abnormalities. The client can view this mapping of the skin along with the dermal therapist on a television screen. This extreme close-up will help to guide the treatment strategies.

The consultation also includes a review of the client’s medical history including any medications being taken or previous medical conditions.

This initial session is an opportunity for the client to learn about all of the procedures available. Among the clinic’s tools is a full spectrum of lasers including lasers for permanent hair removal, photo rejuvenation, the treatment of acne, rosacea and sun damage as well as resurfacing profractional lasers.

Finn says it’s common for clients to come to the clinic with preconceived ideas about imperfections or skin conditions. They might mistake a mole for milia, a small lesion filled with keratin, for example. Others might be concerned about brown spots but a microscopic look at the spots often reveals that underlying broken blood vessels are the actual culprit. The sun is drawn to these areas and causes dark spots to form.

“That’s why proper identification is so important,” Finn explains. She stresses that their extensive experience makes her staff highly skilled at identifying various conditions.

After the expert analysis, there’s an explanation of the number of treatments that may be needed. Clients might move on from hair removal to photo rejuvenation, suggests Finn. The greatest compliments from clients are referrals!
