Advances in laser technology make having younger, clearer looking skin more
attainable. Photo rejuvenation is a skin enhancing technique that uses
multi-wave length lasers to target different problem areas in the skin,
explains Judith Finn, director of E.C.C. Cosmetic and Laser Centre.
This treatment can be applied to skin discolouration caused
by sun damage or broken blood vessels (capillaries), rosacea (redness) and
acne. The lasers target different colours including the browns and reds caused
by these conditions.
Wave length can be adjusted to stimulate the water that
naturally exists in the skin to come back to the surface and reduce signs of
aging. The heating effect of the Broad Band light (BBL) promotes collagen
stimulation. BBL is the latest in photorejuvenation technology, which is able
to target the water that has receded deeper into the skin as we age.
Finn explains that about 70 per cent of our skin is made up
of water and as we age it recedes. At the centre, BBL-STs (broad band light skin
tightening) is a popular procedure. In about 45 minutes a dermal therapist can
treat discolouration and plump up the collagen, or water in the skin as well.
“We do a lot of them,” she says, adding that the treatment
is very relaxing and results are considered better than a facial. “A lot of us
are just looking for that volume that we’ve lost.”
Several treatments will make the collagen “hold”, says Finn
of the long-lasting effects of the skin tightening procedure. Some clients have
one treatment a month for a few months to have a younger, smoother appearance
overall.
A consultation and microscopic skin analysis will determine
the type of treatment that is necessary. Often a combination of reds and browns
will appear but both can be addressed with one laser treatment since the laser
can target different skin depths. In the
case of acne, treatments will kill existing bacteria, as well as target redness
and scarring. The multi-wave-length laser will target the different depths of
skin where the conditions exist. Finn suggests that by treating acne with BBL,
clients may be able to avoid using medication and creams.
