Wendy Wontner didn’t think she’d be able to find a job that combined her experience as a realtor with her athletic pursuits. It does sound like an odd mix but as the sales representative for Ballantry Homes Residences at Lochness Links, she’s found the ideal position. Just to sweeten the deal, she resides in the adult lifestyle community so work is just steps away from home and she enticed her parents to move into the development as well.

A former member of Canada’s national squash team, Wontner has continued to be physically active. She’s getting her fellow residents follow her lead. As a member of the community’s social committee, she helps organize Zumba dance classes, an aqua-fit program, a power walking group, Tai Chi, table tennis and a group that goes kayaking on the nearby Welland Canal. A seasoned kayaker herself, Wontner encourages others to take advantage of nearby kayak rentals and ease into the sport by exploring a calm 20 km stretch of the canal.

That’s the athletic piece of the job. The real estate portion is perfectly in line with what she’s been doing for the past 15 years. Wontner has sold properties from Oakville to Barrie and was ready to give up all of the associated driving. Selling within a long-term development project was the solution she was looking for. In August 2007, she signed on with Norman Hill Realty in Markham, the company associated with Ballantry Homes.

She mans the model homes on five afternoons a week including weekends. In addition to these regular posted hours, potential buyers can book an appointment for viewings. Since many prospective Lochness Links residents come from out-of-town, there are many early morning and late evening bookings. In addition to the models, Wontner fulfills requests to check out the inventory homes that are finished to the drywall. These homes are ready to accommodate purchasers who wish to choose flooring, paint colours and other finishes.

She describes the model homes as the appetizers. As a resident herself, Wontner can also appeal to visitors’ appetites for a new home by familiarizing them with local amenities as well as all that goes on at the community centre. She gives tours of the facility that includes a swimming pool, meeting room and banquet facilities.

The community centre provides a social hub. Wontner is a proponent of getting involved, saying that it makes for a better community for everybody. She can count in that number not only her parents but also some of their friends who were so impressed they moved to the community as well.

The lifestyle community is set to grow from about 120 homes to more than 600 according to the five- to 10-year plan. Just as the job fits with her current lifestyle, its life span will fit well with her retirement plans.
