Randy Shipperbottom was a car audio expert even before he got into the business. It began as a hobby, one in which he invested between $25,000 and $30,000 and hundreds of hours over five years as a car audio competitor. It paid off with multiple wins in competitions run by the International Auto Sound Challenge Association held in the United States.

He’s self-taught, saying that having a genuine interest in something allows you to learn more quickly. While riends and relatives could count on him to install their systems, he was in a supervisory role in an unrelated business. As the awards accumulated and skills progressed, he was approached with a job offer that allowed him take his hobby to another level. That was in 1989 and six years later he joined the team at East Hamilton Radio where he’s manager of the car audio department.

Fast forward to today and Shipperbottom finds himself working with some dramatically evolved products. Throughout his career, every couple of years something new comes along. Car CD players for example used to cost more than $1000 and not available for $99 today. The latest is hands-free communication for drivers marries seamlessly with a factory radio and now there are quality portable and in-dash navigation systems available at an extremely affordable price.

The sounds that come out of his own system range from classic rock to alternative to popular music. He admits to attending about 140 concerts over the years, some of which he’s attended with his wife and now teenage children. They also get to share in enjoying a pretty good sound system at home.
