It takes a lot of time, energy, water, products and
equipment to achieve the perfect lawn –
or does it? It’s possible to have a pristine, green lawn without ever powering
up a lawnmower or spreading an ounce of fertilizer.
An artificial lawn is an option being used by homeowners who
want the look of a lush green lawn but don’t want all of the mandatory
maintenance. Robert Hodichak’s company AGL Grass has been installing artificial
turf on sports fields for more than 20 years and has found residential
applications are growing in popularity.
He cites many advantages to artificial grass, not the least
of which is saving water. According to Hodichak, the average Canadian uses
14,000 litres of water a year watering his lawn. Exhaust emissions from the
equipment used to cut natural is harmful to the environment as are some of the
weed and pest control practices used. In addition to these benefits, homeowners
with artificial lawns save a lot of time and energy that would otherwise be
invested in lawn care.
According the Hodichak, “The applications are endless.”
A green lawn can be achieved in shaded areas and under trees
for example, where natural grass simply won’t grow. Another ideal place for
artificial grass is in pool areas. It not only softens the hard-scape
surrounding the pool, it eliminates the problem of grass clippings landing in
the water.
The product is safe for children and pets. There are no
issues with the colouring or the 100 per cent polyethylene grass blades,
Hodichak ensures. Brown spots caused by pets aren’t an issue either and the
durable product can stand up to 25 years of wear and tear.
When the lawn is installed, a product made from recycled
tires is used for infilling. The tires are froze in a process that changes the
properties of the rubber and allows for metal and fibres to be removed. They
are then shredded for use in lawn installations.
“It’s one step further in making a cleaner environment by
getting those tires out of the landfill,” Hodichak explains.
Durability is key, says Hodichak, along with environmental
considerations but in the end it’s having a green lawn 365 days a year that
customers enjoy.
“It’s going to give you that ultimate curb appeal – exactly
what everybody wants but it’s so hard to do.”
