Cosmetic rejuvenation procedures and treatments continue to evolve with
developments on the horizon that will further refine technologies resulting in
no down time.
“We’re driven by what the consumer wants,” says Dr. Otto Weiglein, a
plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He’s referring to statistics that indicate
a decline in the number of surgical procedures being performed and an increase
in the number of non-surgical procedures that are being done.
“What the customer is telling us is that they don’t want the downtime that
facial rejuvenation surgery or procedures we’ve offered to date necessitate. So
basically, we’re being driven by the no down-time technologies.”
In response to this demand, more and more products are being developed that
can provide “moderately dramatic results” with very little down time.
The doctor confesses that in his profession, he is “regularly bombarded by
the technology companies” offering new and improved treatments. These
presentations provide information that doctors can consider and temper with
knowledge gained by attending courses and seminars on advances in their field.
According to Weiglein, a lot of these procedures are expensive so care
needs to be taken in introducing them in a clinic. He explains that clients
will get upset if they don’t get what they pay for.
The doctor says, “Companies tend to over-promise and under-deliver. My
obligation to the patient is to only offer those technologies that are safe and
that actually work.”
He is enthused about some non-surgical treatments that he expects will be
available within a year to 18 months. The energy facial, which utilizes
ultra-sound and radio frequency, is undergoing advances that will “truly and
dramatically tighten skin”. It will be the new facelift.
Body contouring, another part of the practice, is also moving ahead with
the development of a non-invasive procedure that will, in some cases, replace the
traditional treatments - liposuction and tummy tucks. External radio frequency will
be used to melt and get rid of fat from the trunk and legs without an
operation.
From the perspective of plastic and reconstructive surgeons, says the
doctor, this opens body contouring treatments up “to a wide range of
individuals who couldn’t or shouldn’t have an operation”. While the risk is low
for tummy tucks and liposuction, it is completely eliminated with this
non-surgical innovation.
These anticipated treatments will be an extension of the services already
offered at clinics like Weiglein’s Centre for Personal Surgery.
