Sophisticated style, plenty of space for cargo and passengers along with road-holding agility are all loaded into the redesigned Hyundai 2010 Santa Fe.

The cross-over utility vehicle is one of seven models being introduced by Hyundai over the next two years. According to Derek Chan, assistant general manager of Hyundai of Oakville, the car maker was successful in introducing a series of seven different models over the past 24 months and is now rolling out a similar program. The 2010 Santa Fe is one of the first out of the starting gate.

Drivers may have different priorities but everyone lists safety as one of them, says Chan. The Santa Fe has an impressive five-star rating with standard features that enhance breaking, stability and crash safety. The features include anti-lock brake system (ABS ), electronic break force distribution (EBD), break assist, traction control system and electronic stability control.

New this year are roll-over air bags that are deployed when a censor detects that the vehicle is going to tip over, explains Chan. The vehicle has six air bags in total.

To accommodate the needs of drivers, the Santa Fe offers two engine options. There’s a four cylinder 2.4 litre and a V-6 3.5 litre engine from which to choose. Also new this year is a 14 per cent increase in fuel economy.

“That’s one of the mandates of Hyundai,” says Chan of the improved mileage. “By 2012 we want to be the leading manufacturer in fuel economy.”

In keeping with the Ontario laws restricting the use of hand-held technology in vehicles, blue tooth operation is standard in all models. “You have controls on the steering wheel,” advises Chan. Integrated navigation with a touch screen is also available with the capability of integrating a personal electronic device and downloading contacts and other information into the system.

The interior has been upgraded this year with wood-grain trim. On the outside there have been minor changes in the front and rear bumper as well as the grill for a more aggressive look. The tail lights are also a little different, says Chan, giving the vehicle a sportier, more up-to-date look.
